I know I just posted but this was ridiculous. The girls and I were just reading and talking after dinner in the common room when we heard a knock on the door. Not knowing who it was I was hesitant to open it until I noticed the woman was VERY pregnant. Mary ran over to get Lisa, and Then we all helped the woman to the clinic. She really didn't speak any English, but her friend with her managed to communicate that she already has 10 kids! She had a Ugandan ministry of health booklet with her saying her DOB was in 1962! It also said she was due in early January, so who knows what (if any) of that info was correct.
Our clinic midwife is not around this week (Irene) so we couldn't just call her to come. Lisa called Anthony, a boda boda driver to come and take her to Migale (a health center IV, meaning it is an actual hospital, and can accommodate inpatient stays). Rachel put on gloves and checked the woman out, she wasn't dilated and her water hadn't broken yet. She was having some contractions and pain, however. Anthony arrived with his boda , and she was hesitant to go, since she had two friends with her and she could only take one of them with her on the boda. We convinced her to go, Lisa (aka the clinic) paid for the transport, and she was off. It was difficult for her to get on the bike, and she actually popped a squat and peed in our front yard before she got on the bike! Anthony just flashed Lisa (flashing is when a boda driver or someone calls you and hangs up, so you call them back and then you pay the airtime instead of them) and said they got to Migale all right, so she is at the hospital now, and hopefully everything goes ok!
Just a typical night in Uganda. And the power is back on... For now.
